The last couple of weeks has seen two significant announcements - The first being proposed reforms to the asylum system and the second the proposals and consultation on earned settlement.

We are broadly concerned about the proposals and what they mean for children and young people. Our key concerns across both asylum reform and earned settlement are;

  • Children will have a temporary status for longer. Under these proposals, until clarity is provided on any arrangements for children, a large proportion of children we work with would be unable to obtain settlement in childhood.

  • The further proposed tightening of the welfare safety net risks pushing more children into conditions of destitution, widening inequalities and disadvantage.

In relation to settlement across both areas, we believe that all settlement should be capped at 5 years, giving everyone an equal and fair opportunity to settle.

We have produced two initial briefings looking at each proposal in isolation. with key facts and explanations to help people understand the proposals and what they mean for children.
